I run NovaTerm on my C64, which is capable of a perfectly legible 80 column screen on a Commodore 1702 monitor. I have a bunch of ESP8266-based WiFiMode around here for use with my vintage machines, and the C-64's user port is go for 2400bps.

Have you used StrikeTerm2014? It's kinda updated Novaterm.

In 80 column ANSI mode, you're right, 2400bps is probably best.. but in PETSCII, I usually use 4800bps without any dropped characters. Synchronet supports PETSCII. My board's 40col PETSCII port is 2064 and the 80col port is 2128.

For PETSCII, I usually just load up CCGMS Future 0.2 because it loads much faster than StrikeTerm2014.
